Planned Giving

Create a Legacy for Indiana Science

For more than 140 years, scientists and supporters have invested in the future of science in Indiana. A planned gift can help ensure that IAS continues supporting scientific research, education, publications, students, and scientific collaboration for generations to come.

Ways to Leave a Legacy

Gifts Through Your Will or Trust

Including the Indiana Academy of Science in your will or living trust is one of the simplest ways to create a lasting legacy.

You may designate a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or all or part of the remainder of your estate.

Give From Your IRA

If you are age 70½ or older, you may be able to make a Qualified Charitable Distribution directly from your IRA to support IAS.

This type of gift may count toward your Required Minimum Distribution and may provide tax advantages depending on your individual circumstances.

Retirement Accounts

You may name the Indiana Academy of Science as a primary or contingent beneficiary of an IRA, 401(k), 403(b), or other retirement account.

You may generally designate a specific amount or percentage of the account.

Life Insurance

You may name the Indiana Academy of Science as a beneficiary of a new or existing life insurance policy.

Other options may also be available, including donating a policy that you no longer need.

Real Estate

Residential or commercial property may, in certain circumstances, be used to create a meaningful and lasting gift for Indiana science.

Some arrangements may even allow a donor to retain use of the property during their lifetime. Contact IAS to discuss whether a real estate gift may be appropriate.

Charitable Gift Annuities

A charitable gift annuity may allow you to make an irrevocable charitable gift of cash or appreciated securities while you or a loved one receives fixed payments for life.

After your lifetime, the remaining funds support your charitable intentions with IAS.

Charitable Remainder Trusts

A charitable remainder trust can provide income to you or your loved ones for life or for a specified period, with the remaining assets ultimately supporting your charitable intentions with IAS.

Charitable Lead Trusts

A charitable lead trust can provide charitable support for a period of time, after which the remaining assets pass to your heirs.

Other Assets

There may also be opportunities to support IAS through stocks, closely held business interests, appreciated assets, and other property.

Contact IAS and we can help determine the appropriate next steps and connect you with the resources needed to facilitate your gift.

Support What Matters to You

Your Legacy Can Reflect What Matters Most to You.

Your planned gift can support the Indiana Academy of Science wherever it is needed most or be directed toward an area of the Academy that is especially meaningful to you.

Possible designations include:

Where Needed Most | IAS Endowment | Research Grants | Student Programs | INSPECT | Publications | Annual Meeting | Public Science Programs | A Scientific Section | A Committee | A Specific Program or Event

If a donor has another priority in mind, we would be happy to discuss it.

The 1885 Society

Your Legacy Becomes Part of Ours.

The Indiana Academy of Science was founded in 1885 by scientists committed to advancing scientific knowledge in Indiana. The 1885 Society honors individuals and families who are helping ensure that work continues for generations to come.

The 1885 Society recognizes those who have notified IAS that the Academy is included in their estate or other long-term charitable plans.

There is no minimum gift amount required.

Individuals may qualify for the 1885 Society through a planned gift such as a will or living trust, retirement account, life insurance policy, charitable gift annuity, charitable trust, donor-advised fund remainder, real estate or other appreciated asset, or another planned or deferred charitable arrangement.

Already Included IAS in Your Plans?

We would be honored to know about your intentions so that we can thank you, understand how you would like your future gift used, and recognize you as a member of the 1885 Society if you wish.
